Honesty is the hallmark of the three-time Grammy winner and multiple winner of country music's Female Vocalist of the Year award. That gosh-I-wish-she-were-my-best-friend genuineness, plus her endless talent for finding humor in heartbreak, has endeared Yearwood to music fans for more than 20 years—and no doubt has something to do with her 11 gold albums (more than a half-million copies sold, each).

Now, at the end of her day of television interviews, Yearwood eases onto a banquette in a midtown bistro and orders coffee with sugar—real sugar, but just a little. She then leans in, ready to spill the secret that can't be told in a short television appearance.

whispers Yearwood—now 48 and rocking a turquoise blouse and a black leather miniskirt, "I decided to lose weight when I was 15.""I did Scarsdale. I did Weight Watchers. I did Atkins," she rattles off. Of the original high-fat, high-protein program last on that list, she recalls, "I was like, I can eat bacon and cheese every day! But that got old really quick. Because if I give up a food group, it's all I want. I was like, I just want a piece of toast! The craziest one I did was in college—it was called the Banana, Egg, and Hot Dog Diet. The first day is nine eggs. The second day is nine bananas. The third day is nine hot dogs. Then you are sick. Then you eat a bowl of cereal and gain 10 pounds!"

To make a long story short, Trisha Yearwood Weight Loss Gummies, then gained it back—often with a bonus—more times than she can count. Like a lot of Americans, the singer hails from a family that is "genetically and habitually predisposed to be heavy," she says. Country cooking and Southern-style foods were expressions of love in their Monticello, GA, home. While they didn't eat dishes like butter-baked bacon-wrapped asparagus every night, recipes like that one earned Home Cooking With Trisha Yearwood Weight Loss Gummiesone of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's "awards" for 2010's worst cookbooks.

And the singer admits she maintained unhealthy eating habits even as every other member of her immediate family "got healthy." After a type 2 diabetes diagnosis in the late eighties, Yearwood's father quit smoking and dramatically cut down on carbohydrates and sugars. "He wound up doing really well," she says; her father lived to 72 (he passed away in 2005). Also, Yearwood's older sister, Beth, got pregnant at 39: "She said, 'I want to be healthy for my child.' She became a runner and lost about 60 pounds, and she's maintained that for over 10 years!" Yearwood's mom, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, switched to a vegetarian diet soon thereafter, which she followed until her death in 2011. "I believe her diet gave her more time, and quality time. I really started to think about what I put into my body," Yearwood says.

In truth, Yearwood had agonized for years about why she, too, could not "flip the switch" and—like those she loved and admired most, whose DNA she shared—get disciplined about diet and exercise: "Especially because of the business I am in, I was always like, 'I want this.' I wanted to be healthier, to be thinner," she says. "I hate to admit this, but I didn't want to do what it takes to get there. I had a trainer I would work out with, and then I'd counteract what I did with her." Yearwood would finish the workout, go to film her cooking show, make something super-yummy (pecan tassies! slow cooker chocolate candy!), have a "taste" on camera, and then nosh more on set and at home.

The singer confesses that there is no way she could ever count how many times she started a diet "to look good at an awards show" and didn't come close to dropping the weight. "I wanted a quick fix," Yearwood says. "I want the pill they advertise on TV that melts the fat, but I don't think that exists."

So she remained overweight. She says her caloric sins are totally typical. "It's not like I'm living at Cinnabon. I just really like to cook and bake and be in our kitchen." There was also the issue of portion size. To Yearwood, one serving was often whatever was left. "And I'm a late-night eater," she sighs. "I'll be like, I'll just have a banana. Then I'll eat a handful of pretzels…then a brick of cheese."

Country music songs are often about a wildly terrible thing that motivates a person to finally, really, truly change. And Yearwood has had her share of tough stuff: two divorces; the death of both her parents. But lately, everything for the Georgia native has been pretty peachy. She has her music and TV-show success—and ever since her friend-turned-lover Garth Brooks proposed to her in front of 7,000 fans onstage in 2005, Yearwood has been blessed with her life partner. "He is Superman, because he never made me feel bad about my weight," she says. "He always told me I was beautiful. He says, 'I wish you could see yourself the way I see you. I love you at this weight, and the only other weight I love you at is whatever weight you are.' "
